AS the weather turns, frosty mornings can make driving conditions more dangerous.
So now is the time to get your motor fit for the cold months.
I spoke to Chris Barella, from Euro Car Parts, to get his top tips on prepping your motor in autumn and winter.
CHECK THE VITALS
Chris says: “Make sure you have enough petrol and that your windscreen washer fluid is topped up, with all the jets working. Stop them freezing with concentrated washer fluid — which contains antifreeze.”
My tip: Two litres of Halfords -10 concentrated screen wash is £3. But if you head to Tesco, you can pick up a 2.5-litre bottle for £2.75.
HIT THE LIGHTS
Chris says: “Use dipped beams in heavy snow and additional fog lights if the snow is falling thickly.”
My tip: Halfords is currently offering a free Road Ready car check (usually £15), checking things such as your light bulbs. Book yours online.
Chris says: “Clear your vehicle of as much snow and ice as possible, particularly on windows and mirrors.”
My tip: A 600ml can of Carplan Blue Star de-icer is £2.50 at Go Outdoors stores but £2 at Morrisons.
GET YOUR SUPPLIES
Chris says: “Stock your car with extra supplies in case you break down. Warm clothing and a blanket are really important. Other useful items include a first-aid kit, jump cables, phone charger, torch, reflective triangle and hi-vis jackets.”
My tip: You can save up to 50 per cent on selected blankets and throws at Wilko. I like the charcoal waffle throw — it’s £8, down from £16, and will keep you really warm.
Chris says: “If your car gets stuck on ice, an old piece of carpet placed under the tyres can give you enough traction to get free. If you don’t have some old carpet, use your car mats.”
My tip: You can often get carpet offcuts on the cheap but I like the four-piece car mat set from Wilko for £7. It’s less than a similar set sold at Argos for £15.
