ST. CROIX, USVI – Three-year flood policies that FEMA purchased for thousands of disaster survivors whose homes were flooded are set to expire this year.
Survivors will need to buy a new flood insurance policy or get another type of flood insurance in order to be eligible for future FEMA assistance.
If a homeowner wants financial assistance after a flood, they must have flood insurance with no lapse in coverage. If a property affected by a flood is sold, the new owners will also need to have flood insurance.
In the U.S. Virgin Islands there are 15 policies expiring from hurricanes Irma and Maria.
Flood insurance policies help homeowners recover quickly after a flooding event. They will also pay claims regardless of whether there is a major disaster declaration. Flood insurance claims can be paid for events like flash flooding, storm sewer backup, river overflow, storm surge, mudslides or tropical systems.
